FRANKLIN REGIONAL vs BETHEL PARK: First of two games at Three Rivers Stadium. Defending Quad East champion Panthers debuted their new look stadium last week with a 22-12 win over Hempfield. The defending Quad West champion Black Hawks were led last week by Nick Hickton's two touchdown passes en route to a 21-7 win over Fox Chapel

BALDWIN vs SHALER: The second game of the Three Rivers Stadium doubleheader. The Fighting Highlanders hit the road last week and blanked Plum 27-0. The Voelker brother, Mike and Matt each scored to lead the way for Baldwin. The Titans at home bombed Kiski Area 35-14, thanks in part to Brandon Lohmeier's three touchdowns.

SENECA VALLEY at WOODLAND HILLS: It was the Bud Profeta show for the Raiders last week in their 53- 28 impressive win over Connellsville. Profeta rushed 16 times for 216 yards and scored three touchdowns. The Wolverines were also impressive in the opening week of the season as they beat back Sharon 36-14. Maurice Walker led the way for Wood land Hills with just over 100 yards rushing.

NORTH HILLS at UPPER ST.CLAIR: Each team brings a rich tradition, as well as a 1-0 record into this showdown. The Indians knocked off Canon McMillan last week 37-14. Quarterback Todd Szramowski threw two touchdown passes and ran for one as North Hills pulled away in the 4th quarter. A big 4th quarter helped the Panthers come from behind to beat Erie McDowell. Justin Accamando threw a pair of touchdown passes in the final stanza en route to a 15-12 victory.

NORTH ALLEGHENY at PENN HILLS: Two of the top five teams in Class 'AAAA' clash. The Tigers rolled past Norwin in their opener last week 30-13. The Indians knocked off Butler 27-17. Melvin Kirby led the way for Penn Hills with 121 yards on 23 carries. Quarterback Glenn Hood scored once and threw two touchdowns for the Indians.

CONNELLSVILLE at MT.LEBANON: The Falcons are trying to bounce back from last weeks 53-28 thrashing at the hands of Seneca Valley. Quarterback Keith Shearer threw three touchdown passes in the losing effort. The Blue Devils won their traditional opener at Brooke High in West Virginia 21-10. Chris Fiumara rushed for 137 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown to pace Mt.Lebanon.

RINGGOLD at PENN TRAFFORD: Both teams were impressive in their openers last week. The Rams, on the road, beat McKeesport 30-12 thanks to a big day from Jeremy Cole who rushed for 180 yards and scored four touchdowns. The Warriors had no problem in week one, shutting out Gateway 37-0. Kirk Rogers had 24 carries for 114 yards for P.T.

CANON MCMILLAN at GREENSBURG-SALEM: The Big Macs kept it close against North Hills early, but faded in the second half, losing to the Indians 37-14. The Golden Lions now look for career school victory number 601 after last week historic six hundredth win, a 12-7 squeeker at Indiana.

ALBERT GALLATIN at UNIONTOWN: The Colonials are trying to rebound from a disappointing opener, a 15-12 loss at home to South Park. The Red Raiders went winless in 1998. But their year plus losing streak ended last week with a 15-14 win over Laurel Highlands. Shawn Tyng's 25 yard filed goal in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the Uniontown win.

TRINITY at CENTRAL CATHOLIC: The Hillers were no match for the NSN number one ranked double 'A' team last week, losing to Washington 48-14. Craig Uram and Matt Connolly scored in the final quarter to avoid the whitewash. Meanwhile, the Vikings were on the winning side of a route, pounding rival North Catholic 40-8. Bob Thompson and Dino DiNardo each scored twice for Central Catholic.

KISKI AREA at HEMPFIELD: The Cavaliers were beaten up in their opener, 35-14 at Shaler. Pat Scott and Tristan Booker each scored touchdowns for Kiski Area. The Spartans also lost their opener on the road, 22- 12 at Franklin Regional. Lou Grosely and Pat Timbach opened and closed the scoring with touchdowns for Hempfield.

FOX CHAPEL at GATEWAY: Both the Foxes and the Gators lost their openers on the road. Fox Chapel lost at Bethel Park 21-7 with a John Aitken touchdown pass to Pat Liebert accounting for the only points for the Foxes. The next points the Gators score will be the first this season for Tom Organ's squad after they were shutout at Penn-Trafford last week 37-0.

INDIANA at LATROBE: The Little Indians played tough in their opener last week, but lost at home to Greensburg-Salem 12-7. Bryan Grindle scored from 11 yards out for Indiana's only score. The Wildcats are doing everything possible to forget their opener, a 61-0 thrashing by one of the best teams in the state, Erie Cathedral Prep.

LAUREL HIGHLANDS at PLUM: It's a battle of the Mustangs. L.H. lost a heartbreaker in their opener, 15- 14 after owning a 14-0 lead at halftime. Dan Bosnic had a pair of touchdown runs for Laurel Highlands. Plum was blanked at home by Baldwin 27-0.

McKEESPORT at BUTLER: The Tigers will have to go without injured running back Kinnan Herriott for the second straight week. His injured knee kept him on the sideline for McKeesport's opener, a 30-12 loss to Ringgold. The Golden Tornadoes could not stay with Penn Hills, losing 27-17. Justin Papania threw two touchdown passes, both to Matt Tack for Butler's two touchdowns.

NORWIN at NEW CASTLE: The Knights were beat up at home in their opener, 30-14 by North Allegheny. It doesn't get any easier in week two for Norwin, as they head north to battle the defending Quad 'A' champions. The Red Hurricanes beat Seton LaSalle 42-12. Justin Sheldone had three touchdowns, while John Rosati added two scores for the 'Canes.

'AAA' KEYSTONE CONFERENCE:

THOMAS JEFFERSON at PETERS TOWNSHIP: The Jaguars beat up on Southmoreland in the opener last week 35-6. Quarterback Steve Scott passed for 314 yards and three touchdowns to lead T.J. The Indians lost their opener to Mt.Pleasant 14-7. John Dietzer's 71 yard strike to Scott Kline accounted for Peters Township's only score.

McGUFFEY at SOUTHMORELAND: Both teams dropped their first games last week. The Highlanders were knocked off by Belle Vernon 36-22. Dan Weiss had a touchdown run and a touchdown reception for McGuffey. The Scotties lost at Thomas Jefferson 35-6 last week.

MOUNT PLEASANT at WEST MIFFLIN: An early season battle for a share of first place. The Vikings were 14-7 winner against Peters Township thanks to Jeff Swartz's two touchdown runs. The Titans surprised Elizabeth Forward, winning on the road 24-21. Lee Petersavage led the West Mifflin offense with 169 yards on 29 carries.

ELIZABETH FORWARD at YOUGH: The Warriors lost their opener to West Mifflin 24-21. Pat Risha did his part, rushing for three touchdowns. This is the Cougars conference opener. They lost last week 24-7 to Hampton in a non-conference game.

'AAA' PARKWAY CONFERENCE:

MOON at BLACKHAWK: This is a rematch of last year's 'AAA' championship game. The zero-tolerance defense is back in '99. The Tigers won the WPIAL title last year thanks in part to their great defense. Last week in their opener, the defense shined again, shutting out Ambridge 16-0. The Cougars lost their opener last week, a non-conference game against Center 28-7. J.R. Barley hit Jared Marsillo with a 22 yard strike for Blackhawks only score.

ELLWOOD CITY at HOPEWELL: Two teams doing battle with a share of first place in the Parkway Conference at stake. The Wolverines plastered Keystone Oaks 31-7 last week. Scott LaPenta paced Ellwood City with 108 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings won on the road at Chartiers Valley 27-19. Jason Burkett had two touchdown runs to lead Hopewell.

WEST ALLEGHENY at AMBRIDGE: Tyler Palko, son of head coach Robert Palko, ran for one touchdown, and threw for another to lead the Indians past Montour 17-3. West Allegheny's defense held Montour to 74 total yards. The Bridgers lost their opener to the defending 'AAA' champion Moon Tigers 16-0.

CHARTIERS VALLEY at MONTOUR: Two Parkway Conference teams in search of their initial win of the campaign. The Colts lost at home to Hopewell 27-19 despite a big night for quarterback Rich Demaio. Demaio ran for two scores, and hit Steve Stutsman for a 70 yard touchdown. The Spartans were 17-3 losers at West Allegheny. Montour's only score came off the foot of Ian Jaquette, who connected on a 37 yard field goal.

'AAA' GREATER ALLEGHENY CONFERENCE:

PINE-RICHLAND at DERRY AREA: Both teams only managed six points in opening game losses. The Rams fell to Kittanning 14-6. Brian O'Malley scored on a 15 yard run. The Trojans dropped a 20-6 decision to Highlands. Dan Elliot scored on a 15 yard jaunt for Derry's only score.

JOHNSTOWN at KNOCH: Both teams will be trying to even their records at 1-1 after they lost their openers. The Trojans were pounded by Burrell 48-12. Eric Tillman had two fourth quarter touchdown runs for Johnstown. The Knights lost at Valley 42-8. Nick Gammell hit Dustin Ziacik for a ten yard touchdown score for Knoch.

VALLEY at KITTANNING: The winner will hold a share of first place in the conference. The Vikings were led by Andre Burke's three touchdowns en route to a 42-8 win over Knoch. The Wildcats won of the road at Pine-Richland 14-6 when Tye DeSiderio hit Brent Hockenberry for a 22 yard score, breaking a 6-6 tie in the fourth quarter.

HIGHLANDS at HAMPTON: Both teams started their respective seasons last week with a win. The Golden Rams won a conference game, 20-6 over Derry. Tyrone Woody ran for 121 yards and one touchdown. The Talbots won a non-conference game against Yough 24-7. Ryan Duchak ran for 101 yards and chipped in two touchdown runs for the Talbots.

BURRELL at BELLE VERNON: Both the Bucs and the Leopards were winners on the road last week, now they clash in a Class AAA non-conference game. The Buccaneers pounded Johnstown 48-12. Kevin McArdle led the way with 112 yards and three touchdowns. The Leopards knocked off McGuffey 36-22. Nick Kalcevic ran for 262 yards and two touchdowns for Belle Vernon.

KEYSTONE OAKS at BEAVER: The Golden Eagles and the Bobcats lost their respective conference openers in a big way last week. Keystone Oaks fell to Ellwood City in a 'AAA" Parkway Conference game 31-7 with the Golden Eagles lone score coming from Steve McCormick's two yard run. The Bobcats were crushed by Riverside in their 'AA' Midwestern Conference opener 32-8. Beaver's only score came when Mark Schwarz scored from six yards out.

'AA' MIDWESTERN CONFERENCE:

NEW BRIGHTON at CENTER: The Lions lost their MAC Conference opener to Aliquippa 20-6. Jamaal Newman's 57 yard run put New Brighton up 6-0, but the Quips relied on the big play to capture the win. The Trojans crushed 'AAA' power Blackhawk in a non-conference game 28-7. John Sims ran for touchdowns, including a 44 yard score.

BEAVER FALLS at FREEDOM: The Tigers look for their second straight MAC conference win after disposing of Shenango last week 27-8. While Beaver Falls tries to hold onto a share of first place, the Bulldogs are not only looking for their first win, but also their first points. They were blanked in their opener last week 27-0.

MOHAWK at ALIQUIPPA: The Warriors were impressive in their opening week win, a 27-0 whitewash over Freedom. Jeff Johnson carried Mohawk, rushing for 136 yards and four touchdowns. The Fighting Quips are always tough at The Pit. It appears they will be tough everywhere this season though, after winning last week at New Brighton 20-6. New quarterback Bernard Lay ran for a nine yard touchdown, and passed for a 17 yard score.

RIVERSIDE at SHENANGO: The Panthers were impressive in opening the 1999 season with a 32-8 thrashing of Beaver. Matt Mravintz scored twice, on an 83 yard kickoff return, and on a 47 yard touchdown reception. The Wildcats, playing their home opener under the lights Saturday night, will try to bounce back from last weeks drubbing at the hands of Beaver Falls, 27-8.

STO-ROX at GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC: The Vikings are 0-1 after losing to a Class 'A' Eastern Conference opponent, Wilkinsburg last week 40-19. Charles Greer scored twice for Sto-Rox, who now must face another Eastern Conference foe, the Centurians knocked off Geibel in a big way 54-8. Mark Steinman rushed for 283 yards and six touchdowns.

LEECHBURG at CARLYNTON: Both teams lost their non-conference openers. The Blue Devils lost at home in overtime to Apollo-Ridge 26-20. Leechburg scored 14 points in the 4th quarter to tie the game, only to lose it in O.T. Brian Hulsel scored twice for the Blue Devils. The Cougars lost their opener at Steel Valley, falling 19-7.

QUAKER VALLEY at CLAIRTON: The Quakers got sweet revenge against Shady Side Academy last week. After losing to S.S.A. in the playoffs last year 40-0, Quaker Valley won in convincing fashion 22-8. John Martin threw two touchdown passes to lead the way for the Quakers. The Bears lost a wild one last week, 29-28 in triple overtime to South Allegheny. Tywan Nappler's ten yard pass to Corey Wright in the third overtime pulled the Bears to within one, but instead of going for the tie, Clairton head coach Joe Fisher went for two and the win, but Nappler's pass was incomplete.

SERRA CATHOLIC at CANEVIN: The Eagles and coach Tom Nola open their season with this Friday night tilt at Dormont Stadium after having last week off. The Crusaders probably wish they had last week off after losing 28-6 at Mars. Lou Tenace scored the only points for Canevin with a short fourth quarter touchdown.

BURGETTSTOWN at WILKINSBURG: Both teams looked sharp in first night victories last week. The Bulldogs won at Chartiers-Houston 24-7, while the Tigers were even more impressive with a 40-19 romp at Sto-Rox. C.J. Robbins had three touchdowns for Wilkinsburg, including two kickoff returns for scores.

WAYNESBURG at DUQUESNE: The Raiders began their quest to repeat as 'AA' Three Rivers Conference champs with a dominating showing last week, shutting out Linsly High from West Virginia 42-0. Lanfer Simpson rushed for 108 yards, and scored two touchdowns for Waynesburg. The Dukes also won their opener last week, knocking off Bentworth 14-6. Don Daniels threw for a touchdown, while Todd Harris ran one in from six yards out in the third quarter that broke a 6-6 tie, and provided Duquesne with the winning margin.

SPRINGDALE at SETON LASALLE: This game will take place Saturday night at Honus Wagner Field in Carnegie. The Dynamoes lost at California last week 20-6. Bill Wenzel's five yard pass to Jim Litzinger provided Springdale with their only points. The Rebels hung around early, but were no match last week as they fell at New Castle 42-12. Robbie Moran ran in from one yard out for the opening score of the game. The Rebels other score came when Bruce Gradkewski hit Ralph Del Sando on a 41 yard score, giving Seton LaSalle a short lived 12-7 lead.

WASHINGTON at RIVERVIEW: Two of the top teams in their respective conferences meet Saturday afternoon at Riverside Park in Oakmont. The Little Prexies stomped rival Trinity last week 48-14. Quarterback Brent Marstellar ran for two touchdowns, and passed for another. The Raiders won their game in dramatic fashion, knocking off South Fayette 21-14 in overtime. Phil Sabatini caught a six yard touchdown pass from Ryan Erlich for the winning score.

JEANNETTE at FREEPORT: The Jayhawks disposed of Deer Lakes in week one 20-0. Matt Lebe rushed for 162 yards, including a 26 yard touchdown jaunt. The Yellowjackets' debut last week was not as memorable as they lost at Fort Cherry 49-15. All 15 of Freeport's points came in the fourth quarter, including a Jordan Lassinger five yard run.

NORTH CATHOLIC at BROWNSVILLE: The Trojans were thumped last week in their season opener, losing big to archrival Central Catholic 40-8. North Catholic actually scored first on an Ian Heisel 30-yard pass to Sal Cervone. The Falcons were one of only two WPIAL teams that had week one off. Don Bartolomucci's squad is expected to be a force in the 'AA' Century Conference.

EAST ALLEGHENY at DEER LAKES: The Wildcats came up short in their opener last week, losing to Ford City 28-14. Adam Wagner threw for one score, and John Dinatoli ran for another for E.A. The Lancers were blanked last week by Jeannette, losing 20-0.

NORTHGATE at CHARLEROI: The Flames last week, opened their season with a 21-6 win over their rival Avonworth. Lewis Clark had a big night, rushing for 222 yards and scoring all three touchdowns for Northgate. The Cougars lost their to their Mon Valley neighbor Monessen 28-14. Quarterback Jeff Dumm passed for two touchdowns, one to Ryan Tedrow for 23 yards, and one to Andy Debnar from 71 yards for Charleroi.

BETH-CENTER at FORD CITY: The Bulldogs lost their opener last week at Jefferson-Morgan 21-15. The Sabres season opener was a little more successful, as they scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to knock off East Allegheny 28-14. Matt Klingensmith scored on a 33 yard run, and Adam Peck threw for a three yard score to help lead Ford City to victory.

MARS at STEEL VALLEY: Two of the Top Ten teams in Class 'AA' meet Saturday afternoon in Munhall. The Planets rolled past Canevin 28-6. Brian Rinaman threw for two touchdowns, and Brandon Mueller rushed for two scores for Mars. The Ironmen won their opener at home, 19-7 against Carlynton.

APPOLO-RIDGE at SOUTH ALLEGHENY: These two Class 'AA' teams were overtime winners in their openers last week. The Vikings knocked off Leechburg in one overtime when Jacob Nulph hit Zach Gourley with a three yard score. It was the third time in the game Nulph and Gourley connected for touchdown passes. The Gladiators won in impressive fashion, beating Clairton 29-28 in triple overtime. The winning score came on Nick Cortazzo's ten yard run. Jason Adams extra point turned out to be the difference in the game. This game at Glassport Stadium will once again be played Saturday afternoon as the lights at the facility continue to be worked on.

SOUTH PARK at SHADY SIDE ACADEMY: This game has been moved from Saturday afternoon to Friday afternoon at 2pm. The Eagles were impressive in the opening week win, a 15-12 victory over Albert Gallatin. Kevin Losser ran for one score, while Scott Wagner passed for another to lead South Park to the road win. The Rams defense of the Class 'AA' WPIAL championship began on a sour note with a 22-8 loss at Quaker Valley. Mike Mooney scored from one yard out for Shady Side Academy's only score.

BIG NINE CONFERENCE:

LAUREL at MONACA: The Spartans going for their second straight Big Nine upset. Last week, Laurel beat Farrell 7-6 when David Kuth hit John Fobes with a 39 yard pass in the fourth quarter. Austin Vanassa hit the extra point for the game winner. The Indians meanwhile were upset at South Side Beaver. Todd DiBacco scored from 12 yards out for Monaca's only score.

SOUTH SIDE BEAVER at SUMMIT ACADEMY: The Rams hit the road on a high after last week upset win over Monaca 22-6. Sean McCune scored twice for South Side Beaver, once on a 75 yard interception return, the other on a one yard plunge. Cory Boyd also had a 17 yard jaunt for the Rams in their big win. The Knights are still looking for a win, any win. Summit Academy has dropped all nine of their decisions since entering the WPIAL last year. Last week, they were spanked by Rochester 40-6. The Knights lone score came on a James King 5 yard run late in the game.

ROCHESTER at UNION: The Rams are the defending Class 'A' WPIAL and PIAA champs, and haven't lost a game since the 1997 season, extending their winning streak to 16 games. In last week opening 40-6 beating of Summit Academy, Kirby Griffin led the way for Rochester, rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns. The Scotties lost last Saturday to Western Beaver 54-13. C.J. Hunt threw for one touchdown, while Eugene Hilton rushed for another score for Union.

WESTERN BEAVER at NESHANNOCK: The Golden Beavers routed Union in their Big Nine opener last week 54-13. Quarterback Gary Birmingham had a dream day, completing 10 of 13 passes for 299 yards and five touchdowns. Nick Beresic caught three of them, while Jason Colbert caught the other two. The Lancers were also winners last week, but it was a non-conference victory over West Middlesex 17-12.

FARREL at SHARON: The Steelers are trying to bounce back from a Big Nine opening loss to Laurel 7-6. Star quarterback J.J. Wilson hit Bill Dunge from 26 yard out for the Steelers only score. Sharon last week lost at Woodland Hills 36-14.

FORT CHERRY at MAPLETOWN: The Rangers are the NSN Class 'A' new number one team after beating up on Freeport 49-15. Star running back Mike Vernillo ran 15 times for 165 yards to continue his climb up the all-time WPIAL rushing list. He also scored three touchdowns. The Maples knocked off Cornell 14-8. Nate Caldwell scored both of Mapletown's touchdowns, both one yard plunges.

MONESSEN at BENTWORTH: The Greyhounds started the 1999 season with a nice win at Charleroi. Milton Sanders, Brent Jones and Chase Helon all scored on short runs, while Chris Harvey supplied the exclamation point to the victory with a 46 yard interception return in the 4th quarter. The Bearcats lost at Duquesne 14-6. Bentworth's only score came on a Sean Ross 67-yard interception return.

AVELLA at JEFFERSON-MORGAN: The Eagles were knocked off by Carmichaels last week 24-8. Don Rush hit Curt Paul with a seven yard score for Avella's only points. The Rockets were impressive in a 21-15 win over Beth-Center.

WEST GREENE at CHARTIERS-HOUSTON: The Pioneers were pounded last week in their opener 50-8 by Cameron High out of West Virginia. Brandon Dorsey scored from 17 yard out for the only Pioneer points. The Buccaneers also only scored one touchdown in a first week loss, dropping a 24-7 decision to Burgettstown.

CORNELL at CARMICHAELS: The Raiders fell short in their opener, 14-8 at home against Mapletown. Ryan Walker threw a five yard touchdown to Ron Zieger for Cornell. The Mighty Mikes beat Avella 24-8. Andy Greene ran for two scores, and Dale Piper also scored for Carmichaels.

CALIFORNIA at BRENTWOOD: Both teams won their non-conference openers last week. The Trojans beat Springdale 20-6. Don Higginbotham ran for one score, and threw for another for California. The Spartans crushed Frazier 49-0. Tom Medina had a big night, rushing for 211 yards while scoring four touchdowns.

FRAZIER at SOUTH FAYETTE: Both teams lost their openers last week, one in a squeeker, the other in a blowout. The Commadores were crushed at Brentwood by a score of 49-0. Meanwhile, the Lions lost a heartbreaker at Riverview 21-14 in overtime. South Fayette was led by quarterback Neil Loebig , who was 17 of 27 for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

AVONWORTH at GEIBEL: The Antelopes lost at Northgate 21-6 last week. The 'Lopes only score came when Brian Woods scored from six yards out. The Gators were pounded at Greensburg Central Catholic 54- 8. Jason Goretsky hit Tony Casini on a 44 yard strike for Geibel's only score.
